My goal though is always to be able to output, to speak this new language well. Here is what my experience with learning almost 20 languages has taught me are the best ways to improve your speaking skills in your target language. 0:18 My goal in a new language is always to speak well. 0:39 To speak well you must speak a lot. 1:06 It doesn’t matter when you start to speak your new language. 1:57 You need meaningful interaction with the language. 2:36 Don’t be too hard on yourself. 4:30 Build your skills with extensive reading and listening.

It’s always my strategy when starting a new language to expose myself to as much content in the as I can to improve my understanding. As long as you can understand, you can figure out a way to respond. The only way to get better at responding is to speak, even if you make mistakes and feel embarrassed. If you don’t put yourself out there, you aren’t going to improve. It’s an uncomfortable but vital part of the language learning process.
